After signing into WordPress today to post some info on our photo shoot this morning (which, by the way, will be posted as soon as I finish this), I found this motivational posting about why intelligent people fail:
- Lack of motivation. A talent is irrelevant if a person is not motivated to use it. Motivation may be external (for example, social approval) or internal (satisfaction from a job well-done, for instance). External sources tend to be transient, while internal sources tend to produce more consistent performance.
Due to the many emails and conversations I have had with practitioners around the world, I thought this was a good description of what we all experience from time to time. “A talent is irrelevant if a person is not motivated to use it” is actually quite accurate when it comes to a practitioner who does not always have the motivation to push through barriers when they present themselves.
It is here that either makes or breaks a practitioner, because things will not always be easy. We are all presented with barriers in our lives that will push us off course and take up so much time that our training sacrifices. Naturally some of this cannot be avoided and we have to do what we have to do. However, there are times when we can push through it and still train what we love: Wing Chun Kuen. It comes down to if we really want to push through it.
We must all ask ourselves how much we are willing to put into our training, and what do we consider as being so important that we would rather watch our favorite television show or spend an hour or more on YouTube vs. 20 or 30 minutes work our Wing Chun? Many will do exactly that but then balk that they do not have the time for their training.
In the end, it comes down to each of us to keep pushing through these barriers in order to take us to the next level, to learn how to get beyond these barriers in order to learn the lessons needed for continued improvement. It is a choice vs. always being “life” like many will think. The real question is, how important is it to you?
