While most of our members train in their homes or with private training partners, some of them have taken the extra step in starting a study group in order to reach out to those around them for training partners. These training groups are designated as AWCA Continued Learning Extension Schools.

Other Distance Programs vs. The AWCA DLP
Distance learning is accepted world-wide as a viable means for gaining knowledge about any topic, regardless of what that topic is. And the martial arts are certainly no exception.
There "are" some Wing Chun-related distance programs out there, and I have a great deal of respect for anyone who takes the time of putting a program together in order to help those interested in realizing their dreams of training this phenomenal martial art. It is no small feat to create the variety of media necessary for training.
However, the problem I have seen with what they offer and "how" they offer it is:
They do not incorporate proven distance learning principles or guidelines
They do not understand distance learning vs. a classroom environment
They do not educate themselves in providing approved learning resources, and
They do not understand the resources available to today's learner
For example, let's look at what you will find with most Wing Chun distance programs available today.
All provide a stack of VHS tapes or DVD's, plus a few training manuals. At first glance, this might sound great because you have a ton of information right there at your fingertips. The problem with that, however, is that you are expected to wade through this mound of information on your own by following a sometimes "cryptic" and confusing manual.
Along the way, you "hope" you are training properly, too, which is an issue all to itself.
In a few months - maybe even a year or so - they have to physically travel to the school itself and demonstrate what they have learned. This means incuring more costs for travel, hotel, the training fee itself, food, and everything else that goes into a journey of this type.
Is this true distance learning? Not at all. There is more to distance learning than simply learning at home, and that is the problem with most programs: They do not understand how to deliver proven-effective DLP methods that can be substantiated and that are shown to be actually worthwhile to the user.
How Does The AWCA DLP Work?
The AWCA Distance Learning Program encompasses the same training curriculum that we use in our gym. A student would not learn the entire Siu-Nim-Tau form and all drills in one sitting because they could not take it all in. So if that is not the curriculum in the gym, why create tapes or DVD's with that structure?
We teach in core blocks of instruction both personally in the gym and in our DLP. These blocks of instruction are derived from lessons learned in the eBook Training Series, which is the literal core of the program itself. It is learned at your own pace and with the time you have available for training.
This has shown to be extremely effective regardless of "how" you like to learn. Some prefer reading and studying, some prefer video instruction, and some prefer seeing photos. Everyone has their own preferred way of learning, and the eBook Training Series encompasses all three learning formats completely.
To reinforce this training and to "close the gap" of what is not included in the eBooks, our monthly DVD's take it further and go into one-on-one drills, solo training, working these actions on the wooden dummy, and also explaining the concepts for how things really work.
In a nutshell:
|
Sounds easy, huh? Well that is because it is! When you have the right tools to work with, any endeavor is that much easier because it is more effective. However, do not think that you will not work, because you will. Attaining a skill set for any physical activity takes time, dedication, practice, and perseverance, so most assuredly you will work.
This is not the kind of program where you can watch a few videos here and there and be rewarded with rank. Instead, this is a program for those serious wanting to learn real Wing Chun Kuen for self-defense, as well as those that want to take it further and start their own AWCA affiliate branches.
IVTKFF-Approved
The AWCA Distance Learning Program curriculum has been reviewed and approved by Dai-Sifu Don Grose, President of the International Ving Tsun Kung Fu Federation (IVTKFF) and Headman of the Tucson Ving Tsun Academy. Being an Instructor Level 6 (Senior Instructor and Master of the Wing Chun system), Dai-Sifu Don is known internationally for his Wing Chun skills, especially Chi-sau and real-world self-defense applications.
Additionally, our program has been reviewed by certified distance learning educators and found to be within acceptable DLP guidelines and principles. Their feedback and guidance has been instrumental for continuously improving and delivering the program for maintaining compliance to proven distance training formats.

What This Program Is And Is Not
In case you are wondering, let me make it perfectly clear what this program is and is not. The AWCA Distance Learning Program is NOT an informational package. You will not find the entire form or complete system on one DVD. Those kinds of programs do nothing but mass-market the system to the public in order to demonstrate what Wing Chun is about, and they do nothing for actually learning from.
It is also not a program where requests to learn only specific areas are honored. For example, some have asked to learn only the Biu-Tze, only the wooden dummy, etc. We do not believe in this type of training because it leaves out the core of the curriculum itself. Those who venture into learning specific areas without being ready are proven to be ineffective practitioners and are simply cheating themselves (as well as feeding their own ego).
Instead, this is a full-featured training program that takes you step-by-step through actually learning Wing Chun Kuen. And if you put in the time and effort, you will learn. If you want to skip steps in the curriculum, you should seek another program because we do not short-change our members by giving them a false sense of security.
What Do Our Members Think?
Our student base is quite pleased with our curriculum and how it is approached. Many come from other schools, while others are brand new to the art. Take a look at what some of them are saying about the program.

Not Enough? Here's Even More
"I finally found what works for my schedule and hectic lifestyle." |
"Thanks for making such a great program available to those that do not have schools in their area." |
"Great videos and easy to understand training makes this just what I have always looked for." |
"The core blocks of learning keeps me from getting 'bogged down.' Great idea!" |
"Definitely the best training decision I ever made." |
Feedback and Testing
One of the more common questions you might be thinking is "How do I get feedback," or "How is testing done?" That would sure be questions "I" would have.
Because of today's affordable video technology, creating your own videos is one of the easiest things you can do. And as luck would have it, it is also an excellent feedback tool that I use in my own gym. Taking that route even further, I have applied it to a very simple but effective feedback and testing process.
Using a special video service (information provided upon enrollment), you can submit your videos directly to this service for my review. Once reviewed, I can then immediately send video feedback based on your current skills and offer assistance for improving your training.
Pretty simple, huh?
And because we use this same technology for broadcasting our classes here at the AWCA gym, you get direct training advice in real time!

A Note To Experienced Practitioners
A program such as this "is" the solution to what many practitioners around the world have hoped for. Naturally, however, there are many who already possess a certain skill level, and they have questions regarding how the training would progress for them since they already have a particular skill set.
Every school has their own unique way of training and teaching, so what I pass on is how it was taught to me. In that light, however, I also introduce extended concepts from a variety of colleagues and masters along my journey.
Regardless of where or how anyone has learned previously, all AWCA practitioners must be versed in this curriculum and step-by-step training method. Therefore, even if you have completed the Wing Chun system in its entirety at another school, I must still ensure that you are versed in our curriculum.
To that end, videos of your current skill set must be submitted for review in order to evaluate where in our ranking system you would placed, as well as what needs to be worked on in order to become versed in the AWCA Wing Chun training methods.
If you have learned all of the empty-hand curriculums, the wooden dummy, and the weapons, you would submit videos of your training for review. It is not to tell you what is "right" or what is "wrong;" instead, it is solely to inspect what you know, how well you know it, and what needs to happen in order to get you into the correct curriculum for our training.
Not all Wing Chun schools have such a structured curriculum, so even after years of consistent training, a high level instructor might find him or herself in a lower postion with our program. It is not because we are "better" than anyone; rather, it is because we have a step-by-step curriculum with specific points at each level and a set way of passing on that program. Depending on how close your previous training is to what we do and how we do it, that will determine where in our program you would fall into.
Also, this ensures that all practitioners representing the AWCA actually possess the skills they claim to possess, as well as ensuring that the AWCA curriculum is being passed on correctly and completely.
I know you are itching to find out what is included in the program, so let's take a look!

Registration And Fees
Registration and monthly fees are cost-effective in their own right, but even more so when you consider what personal training in a gym would cost.
Gym training can be as low as $75 per month and as high as $120 a month (with some schools charging even more). And that does not take into account what it costs in the time getting there and back, the money spent for gas, or the time away from your family training.
For one month's fees at a gym, this is equivalent to FOUR months of fees with the AWCA Distance Learning Program. Pretty amazing, huh?
And unlike other schools, there are also NO CONTRACTS by enrolling in the AWCA DLP. I do not believe in contracts. You are here because of your dedication and committment to learning Wing Chun, not because you have to be.

Registration and fees are pretty simple, and you will find no hidden costs.
