Installing and Using the "Fix My eBook" Program

Note: This is sporadic and not everyone needs to follow the below instructions. I have yet to see it happen with an AWCA eBook, but if you encounter it, this should fix it right up.

Also, if you do encounter it, please let me know so that I know it is happening and can provide more documentation about it here. Although I do not directly support the "Fix My eBook" program itself, I can document additional situations to assist you.

If you have WindowsXP and Service Pack 2 (SP2) is installed, you might find that you are unable to register your eBook(s) or that they no longer operate properly (and sometimes they will not open at all). The first page might open, but after that, you begin encountering error messages.

SP2 closed a lot of "holes" in your operating system, but it is still just a program. It cannot know ports and various areas that eBooks use for properly running unless you "tell" it. That is good and bad: "good" because Microsoft attempted to head off potential security threats, but "bad" because SP2 is not smart enough to know what is good or bad.

I have heard that this applies to all eBooks, regardless of who created them or what compiler was used. Note again, however, that I have yet to see it apply to an AWCA eBook.

If you are encountering this problem:

  1. Click here to download a program called "Fix My eBook" (41.71 KB, zipped) to your Desktop.
  2. Unzip the program.
  3. Prior to opening your eBook, run "Fix My eBook" and leave it running in the background while viewing.
  4. The program temporarily circumvents the ports that SP2 closed and will allow you to run all of your eBooks.

Double-click the file and click Extract all files

Click Next

Extract the file to the location of your choice

Click Browse and select your Desktop (or another location that you can easily find).
When ready, click Next to start the extraction. It will be pretty quick, barely 1 second.

Extraction complete

Click "Finish" and then double-click the "fixmyebook.exe" program icon

Allow entire script this time

If you are running an anti-virus program, such as McAfee's VirusScan, you will see an alert.
Click Allow entire script this time or whatever similar message for your program you are receiving.

Pawan Agrawal's Fix My eBooks

The "Fix My Ebooks" program will now run. If this fix is what you need, then you MUST leave this program running in order to view your eBook.
